Tech rehearsals and Amy Sounders.

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

There is a time when you create a show where you have to behave like those women or men that work in Hospitals helping women delivering their babies. Or well, that is not really the right thing to say because we are not that we are more a little bit the breathing or the pain that announces with a cry that the baby is alive and kicking. Yes, that is more likely.

You have to be fill with patient and hope and do everything that you are told and never ever argue. There are moments when you are allowed to do that but that is just during the slot that you deserve. And with that I mean the moment when you tech your number in this case.

We have spent the whole day teching the show we are going to with Amy aka Miss Behave. She is really great with her character and with her numbers but she is not really great when it comes to rehears and takes control of a whole show.

I do understand her. It demands so much from you that I could never do both things at the same time. Your obligation as director is not to miss any detail and when you are an actor you are all the time walking that fine line between doing everything and letting yourself go free to be the wildest and best beast on the stage.

Take one bus and one tube and one plane and one train and one bus.

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

I got so many means of transportation this morning that now that I am thinking about it is a little bit ridiculous. Firs the tube to go from my house to the place where I can get a bus that will take me to the airport. It was 8 o’clock in the morning and everybody was coming home from some party. I felt really silly. But this is because nowadays it is very difficult to leave my house and my family. Anyway I am getting older.

Then I arrived to Bilbao and I got the bus to the airport. I arrived too early and I had to wait for almost twenty minutes until the bus left. Was I pissed off?

At the airport there were lost of people travelling to London but for grace of destiny I got in the clever cue and I was in very early so I had time to have some breakfast and read my paper.

I did not sleep in the plane as usual. I arrived to Gatwick and I met this girl in the airport that had arrived to London for the first time and that it was the first time that she had fly. It made me fell really old. She approached to me while waiting to get our suitcases because she did not speak English and she did not know where did she had to go. Immediately I remember the first time I came here and how much would I have liked to meet someone like me that would have taken me all the way to London and told me that everything was going to be fine. Nobody did that. My sister was great and helped me as much as she could and probably as much as I let her. In the same way that she let me helped her. When we arrived to Victoria she told me that from there she was going to go by herself. I offered my phone number and she said no. And boy she was right.

The name of this girl was Olivia and I thought it was a very beautiful name.

Hotels

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

There are two things I want to share with all of you. Both things are related to being in a hotel.

The first one is how funny it is to go to a hotel on holydays when you are used to go to Hotels just when you are working.

And the second one and not for that less important the difference experience that is to be in a hotel room with someone else.

You will have to agree with me that those two very simple points make a huge impact in someone like me that spends many hours per year in hotel rooms and most of the time I am by myself. I said most of the time because some times in the passed I had to share my room with some other Spymonkey member but nowadays we all have our own and private place to sleep.

And for me there is a loose ritual that I have every time I get into a new hotel room. I find the remote control of the TV and am go through the channels to see how generous the hotel is. Then I put my suitcase in one place and that is the place where it is going to be until the time I live.

I could not do that when my wife was in the room. It is a sign of solitude and it is disrespectful. So I hung my clothes and I unpacked my bag and I lie on the bed while Miren did her things.

Then the rooms become private really fast. That is the reason why they are all the same so you do not have done a big emotional journey to be comfortable.  In the Hotel Puerta de Oriente I did not end being completely comfortable. It is true we did stay for a very short time but the real reason was that I was not by myself so the things that usually made me fell happy, like the size of the window or the amount of water of the shower or the goodies for washing yourself did not matter. The thing that made me the happiest was to be with Miren.

At Tresgrandas; at the Hotel Puerta de Oriente

This is a catch from the Internet. Can you believe it? The funny thing is that we did not have anything and then we searched the net and we got the first one that we called and had free rooms. It is very bad in this time of the year to try to get a room in a hotel and expect that you will get one.

We drove in the morning but not too early because… why to wake up early to go on holydays when the porpoise of holydays is to sleep in? So by the time we arrived there it was time to check in.

We found the hotel after driving through an obscure road that looked as if we were going to end up in the middle of the mountains of Asturias. Once there the shepherds were going to rape us and then roasted us in their camp fire. But at the end of that road there was a painteresque village and a very pink hotel and that was our hotel.

They were really nice. The girl who runs the hotel has two kids and they were really nice with us. But we did not have time to loose, we were on holydays and we had to go and hit the beach. And to our surprise the beach was really close. We went to a beach called La Franca. It did not have any waves and that was upsetting but we got toasted.

Then we had one of those super expensive and over price dinners that you get at the restaurants that are too close to the beach and went back to the hotel for a nice sleeping night.

We slept great and there was a huge storm during the night. The place is absolutely gorgeous. Go and visit it.

Shooting a movie in two weeks

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I have seen in many shops these books about how to make a movie. Well, these books imply that to do a movie is very easy and you just have to think it, plan it and then everything is done really fast and easy. Well let me tell you, what we have tried did not work and I am squeezing my head thinking how to do it again and this time does it well. One of the first things is that you need someone that is the boss. That person is the person that for the better or for the worst is going to be the one that call the shots. He or She is in charge so there is a unique vision of the whole thing.

And I am sure that if you have that then everything else it is just a question of adjusting and thwacking the material that you came up with.

I am leaving for England in two days. I went to visit my parents and my sister and my niece. What a mess¡¡¡ there they were in Noja all surrounding my niece without a proper leader and with many problems of how to show the lovely Leire how things should be. I left fast. I left really fast because I was going to get in many troubles. I fought with my sister, I upset my mum and I made my father to be more eccentric.

Tomorrow I go on holyday for two days to Asturias.

And More about my Spanish Project

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

I am happy to announce that we got a little bit of money to do a show in Bilbao next year. They gave us the money to do the show whenever we want after the grant is official. We have decided to do it next year the latest possible. At the moment I do not really know what is going to happen with Spymonkey and not because this is the Spymonkey blog but it is my priority.

We are counting on Cal coming to Bilbao in March and work with us for four weeks and then run the show for a while and then in the Autumn we will do two weeks more of work and then we will have the official opening.

So I have been working with my friends and let me tell you it is really tiring. Not that they are tiring it is more the fact that I have the felling that I have to be pulling from them all the time and it is really boring. I want them to do some of the pulling.I have to say that they one that really worries me is Eguzki or glass of whisky because she is a fucking mess and also she thinks that everybody should be working for her.

We said to meet and try to shoot something and see what happened. We dressed up as cooks and we did some shooting, all in on go. Jon got the material and tells me that as far as he is concern nothing was good. It is fucking difficult to work with people. After starting to work with my friends in Spain I have learned to realise how great we have done all this years with Spymonkey.

In Mundaka with the Bishops

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

It is a really sunny day. The Bishops arrived a couple of days ago and they have spent the whole time on the beach. They do not want to know anything else. Of course it is understandable they do not wan to see any more churches or cathedrals; they see many of them during the whole year.

This time they have come with family. The cousins or the second cousins or some kind of relative’s relationship that I cannot really define now. He is the cousin of the Steve so …yes, they are cousins but when it comes to family business it is always difficult.

We met in Bakio de first day. Bakio is a small town east of Bilbao. It is by the beach and if you ever arrive to Bilbao by plane you will be able to see it from the play because that is one of the routes that the planes from London use to fly in.

There were not waves in Mundaka and Bakio is always the second best. I went in the water with them and was shit. They were kind enough not to mention it. But I could see that I was being shit. With this comment I do not mean that I have ever been any good but there was a time last year when I was able to be up on the board and now I am just a useless shit.

Today I took them to eat to the Boliña Vieja restaurant in Gernika and they were really happy with it. They are leaving in two days and … I am going to miss them.

Jose, Ines, Enzo, Leic, Steve ad Kathy were really nice with us in Amsterdam and I wanted to be very nice with the Bishop so I can get a place in heaven.

Fiesta in my house

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Well, the Fiesta just finished. It has finished for me at least because 90% of the people who attended the Fiesta are now on the streets of my village. You cannot imagine what it is to have a fiesta in your house with 15 girls in their late thirties… it is wild and dangerous. They go completely mad. They are in that age where the amount of responsibilities is too much and any opportunity to gain some freedom is use to the maximum.

So the house became a big hen farm, full of high pitch noises that made my head inn.I was in charge of the serving of the food and drinks and of making sure that my wife was having a good time without having to worry about anything related to the well being of the party.

The girls drunk, the girls ate, the girls said very silly and funny jokes, the girls gossiped, the girls gave presents to my lovely wife, the girls made my wife really happy and then the girls dance in the kitchen like drunk homeless to the tunes of Robbie Williams and then the girls went off to drink more on the streets.

I could not follow them thou a tried. I was so tired. So at one point a signalled to my wife that my time had come and that I was leaving. She understood really fast and … here I am with my tale between my legs while all the hens keep la fiesta going.

Tanyas for everybody in Finland

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

And it is really true.

Why do I need to say this? I mean to say that it is really true. The reason is because it is hard to believe and also it sounds as a not very important thing to say. Who cares how people are called? It is just a little bit of additional information. Does the name that my parents gave me make me a better person? Do we have a big weight in our live depending of the way we are called?

In some cases I am sure it is like that. Your family name in combination with you first name like … I do not know or if suddenly your mother or your father were a fan of a famous singer and suddenly it happens that I will be called Julioiglesias Basauri. That would have been awful. Julioiglesias Basauri, what a nightmare in the school with all the kids bulling me like hell. Imagine fat and Julioiglesias… I do not want to think about it anymore.

Well in Finland they like Tanya. They like that name very much. I do not know why, if you want to know search in Google, and I do not care. The important thing for me is the fact, it is the fact that we have been there for four days and I got to meet five Tanyas so if in doubt when your are in Finland and you do not know how the woman in front of you is called try Tanya.

Siestas in the summer

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Everybody sleeps more in the summer. So everybody is happier in the summer because the more you sleep the happier you are and this is not something that I say it is something that very famous specialists say all over the world.

There are some moments from the siesta that have not much happiness like when the moment to finish it comes. Your face is half sleep and half away and it has the marks of the place where you face has been resting for those sublime twenty to thirty minutes.

But apart from that moment that is usual nasty but very short everything about the siesta is great and pleasurable.

When you open your eyes after a siesta immediately the sunlight reminds you that you still have some time to live that day. You have not kill the day you just have a little stop to recharge batteries and now you are ready to face the world again.

Also the moment of going for a siesta,  a moment that it necessarily has to happen after lunch. The characteristics of the lunch are not important but it is best if you have had a glass or two of wine, not necessary thou.

In that moment you body, your brain tired from the morning activity is asking for a little bit of time off and you fell your eyes closing. They are sending signs that it is time to go a lay down, anywhere for a small period of time. You fell like drifting away and you are going to drift away.

The siesta is wonderful.
