Residencies

We welcome opportunities to integrate the work of the company within larger institutions, universities, drama schools, venues and festivals. Here is an example from our recent work.

Case Study: Unity Festival residency

In 2012 we were invited by Hijinx Theatre, the Cardiff inclusive company based at the Wales Millenium Centre. The company specialise in teaming up leading theatre practitioners with a mixed group of professional able-bodied and learning-disabled actors from the Hijinx Academy. They invited us to be company-in-residence for their Unity Festival, at the Wales Millenium Centre in June 2012.

After some initial discussion with festival co-ordinator Ben Pettit-Wade, it was suggested that Spymonkey work with a mix of regular Hijinx performers and outside participants to create the opening and closing ceremonies for the festival. Aitor spent a week with the group of 20 participants, introducing them to the basics of our clown methodology and creating a great group dynamic.

Petra, Toby and designer Lucy Bradridge then spent two weeks devising and rehearsing material: A 'Committee of Openings' presided over an opening ceremony in the main entrance hall of the WMC, including a fly-past by the Red Dragons Display Team. This first presentation acted as a 'work-in-progress' performance which could then be refined and added to by the 'Committee of Closings' in their closing ceremony, comprising a pastoral operetta, an olympian hoop routine, aeronautical origami and a Hymn to Closing.
