All of Shakespeare’s deaths performed by “four of the greatest clowns working in Britain” (Time Out)

directed and adapted by Tim Crouch

There are 74 onstage deaths in the works of William Shakespeare. (75 if you count the black ill-favoured fly killed in Titus Andronicus.)

They range from the Roman suicides in Julius Caesar to the death fall of Prince Arthur in King John; from the carnage at the end of Hamlet to snakes in a basket in Antony & Cleopatra; from Pyramus and Thisbe to young Macduff. There are countless stabbings, plenty of severed heads, some poisonings, two mobbings and a smothering. Enorbarbus just sits in a ditch and dies from grief. And then there’s the pie in Titus Andronicus.

In THE COMPLETE DEATHS, Spymonkey will perform all the deaths in 90 minutes. Sometimes lingeringly; sometimes accidentally; sometimes movingly; sometimes musically; always hysterically. Using only Shakespeare’s language (plus some inevitable present-day squabbling) the four ‘seriously, outrageously, cleverly funny clowns’ (Time Magazine) attempt to scale the peaks of highest culture and plumb the depths of deepest tragedy. They do this while also coming to terms with their own mortality – and stupidity.

THE COMPLETE DEATHS marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s own death. It will be a solemn, sombre and sublimely funny tribute.

A Spymonkey co-production with Brighton Festival and Royal & Derngate Northampton.

Supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of England. Developed at The Other Place at the RSC, and supported by the MA Dramatic Writing Lab at Drama Centre London at Central Saint Martins.

To celebrate their 20th anniversary as ‘the reigning monarchs of physical comedy’ (Melbourne Age), Spymonkey are offering an unmissable opportunity to catch one of their favourite shows, a deliciously demented take on the pulp gothic romance: Hitchcock’s Rebecca meets The Pink Panther.

“One of the funniest shows you will ever see, performed by four of the greatest clowns working in Britain”
Time Out

Overflowing with brilliant characters, rip-roaring farce and virtuoso physical comedy, this is the show which made them an international comedy sensation from Just For Laughs Montreal to Sydney Opera House.

A spooky mansion, a plucky young heroine and a handsome English aristocrat. Add a German butler and a Spanish soap star and you’re… COOPED with Spymonkey!

“It is simply not possible to have more fun at the theatre than this” The Stage

Directed by Cal McCrystal, the comedy genius behind the National Theatre’s One Man Two Guvnors.

“For all their gleeful, larky enjoyment wafting across the footlights like a blessing, these are serious virtuosi”
