Complete Deaths / January Complete Deaths week

We spent last week working at Bird Studios in Brighton, mainly focused on consolidating choreographic routines, musical bits and set pieces.

Cleopatra’s dance with the asps is being choreographed by Janine Fletcher, who we first worked together with on Moby Dick, half of Brighton performance/comedy dance duo The Two Wrongies. Toby has written a track with some snake-charmery/Egyptian pop flavours, and we’ve been working up some sand-dance/streetdance/heiroglyphic moves. It has the makings of an astonishingly ridiculous piece of theatre.

Theo Clinkard – fresh from a stint as choreographer at Pina Bausch’s Wuppertal Tanztheater – is working with us on our Macbeth Murders dance piece, looking at Pina Bausch and Martha Graham as inspirations. It’s a brilliant thing to work with people with extraordinary skill sets (and ones who don’t mind it when we slaughter their work in usual Spymonkey fashion).

Good further work on the piece we are calling ‘Fuhrer Dels Bard’, the starting point of which is imagining how the great Catalan post-apocalyptic post-punk collective Fura Dels Baus would tackle Richard III, with a German industrial techno soundtrack.

And some fine work from John Hunter at RULER on our studio photos, a full selection of which will be here soon!
